Video Poker is a beloved game that can be bet on in casinos all over the globe, or in your house on your personal computer, using a web connection. The game rules are very simple and involve the player trying to achieve the highest mixture of cards possible in order to win money. In this respect it is much the same as a normal game of poker, minus the interaction with competing players. Of course, techniques used in a physical game of poker, like tricking, will be irrelevant here.
The game of Video Poker starts when the player inserts credits (whether it is tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and presses the draw button. A 5 card hand will be electronically ‘distributed’ on the video screen.
The Video Poker machine also has hold buttons, and players should now choose which cards to hold and which to discard. For the cards the bettor wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons should be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any amount of cards they want, from all to none.
After the bettor has decided on which cards she wishes to retain, they should press ‘draw’, at which point any new cards are handed out if desired. The round is now completed, with the Video Poker machine analyzing the cards to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands shown on the payout schedule.
Generally, the lowest succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money increasing for each better hand. A common list of winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to two pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It definitely goes without saying that the pay out schedule can range from machine to machine, so that experienced bettors are agile enough to select the most profitable game each and every instance.
As soon as the first round has finished, the player can either decide to remain on in an attempt to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any credits that they may have won. Additionally, several styles of the game give the player an opportunity to increase their wins, in which instance a further round is played. There are also variations between specific machines, with some decks of cards including wild cards and other varying characteristics to increase playability.
